Classics and Ancient History



Assistant Professor (tenure stream) in Greek history
and
Assitant Professor (tenure stream) in Roman history and/or Latin literature


The Department of Classics at the University of Toronto is soliciting applications for two tenure-stream positions at the rank of Assistant Professor.  One position is in the field of Greek history and the other in Roman history and/or Latin literature.  Successful applicants will be expected to contribute to a growing and research-intensive doctoral programme and to a thriving undergraduate programme in Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilization.  The department is particularly interested in candidates who combine a thorough training in Classical languages with an interest in other humanities disciplines.

The appointments will begin 1 July 2002; an appropriate doctoral degree must have been earned by that date. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applications should include: a curriculum vitae, a sample of academic writing, evidence of excellence in teaching, and a short description of the applicant's current research plans. Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to:

Ancient Philosophy



Canada Research Chair
The University of Toronto solicits applications for a tenure-stream appointment in Ancient Philosophy. The successful candidate will be jointly appointed to the Departments of Classics and Philosophy.

The successful applicant will be nominated for a tier II Canada Research Chair. Accordingly, candidates are expected to be outstanding scholars in the field of ancient philosophy, whose research and teaching will make major contributions to the quality and stature of the field and the two departments.  The person appointed will join an active group of teacher-researchers at the University of Toronto and will be affiliated with the Collaborative Programme in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy.

The appointment is to begin July 1, 2002. Salary and rank commensurate with experience.

Tenure-track appointment
Lecturer/Assistant Professor
Classical History

Applications are invited for a tenure track appointment at the Lecturer/Assistant Professor level effective July 1, 2002 in Classical History with a secondary interest in Latin Studies.  All candidates will possess philological competence in Greek and Latin normally expected in international Classical Scholarship.  At the undergraduate level a demonstrated ability to teach large introductory classes in Ancient History, as well as intermediate level classes in Greek and Roman History, is essential.  The successful applicant will be able to contribute to the Graduate Programme of the Department: the preferred research area is Roman Republican and Imperial History; an interest in historiography and cross-disciplinary approaches to cultural history would be advantageous.  In Latin studies, competence and readiness to teach Latin language and literature at the undergraduate level are expected.   Applicants should have completed the Ph.D. or be close to finishing and show competence in teaching, research and publication appropriate to their experience.  The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  This position is subject to budgetary approval.  In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, this advertisement is directed to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
