CAC Undergraduate Essay Competition for 2000-2001

I am pleased to announce the CAC Undergraduate Essay Competition for 2000-2001.  This year, in order to make the playing field more level for students in junior or introductory courses, there will be a second competition for essays written for junior/introductory courses.  Essays for senior/more advanced courses will be judged in a separate competition. Cash prizes will be given to the winners of each competition (first, second, third) and the winning essays will be published on the CAC website.  The deadline will be August 31, 2001 to allow essays from summer courses to be included, and winners will be announced by December 2001. There are no restrictions on length or subject matter, but please make sure that the copy of the essay sent is a clean one (i.e., no grades, corrections, or identifying marks such as the names of the student or professor or the institution).  If possible, please include a cover page with just the title of the essay, and the student's name and information on a separate sheet of paper.  It would also be helpful if the nominating professor would indicate which competition (junior or senior) the essay should be judged under.

Please encourage your students to enter the competition.

Entries can be sent to:

8-Week Intensive Latin and Greek Summer School
University College, Cork, Ireland
July 2 - August 23, 2001

The Department of Ancient Classics offers an intensive 8-week summer school for beginners, with parallel courses in Latin and Greek. The courses are aimed at students in diverse disciplines who need to acquire a knowledge of either of the languages for further study and research. In each language 6 weeks will be spent completing the basic grammar and a further two weeks will be spent reading texts. Students in the Greek course will read Plato's Apology in the final two weeks. Students in the Latin course will have the option of reading classical (Vergil, Aeneid 4) or medieval texts (selection from Reading Medieval Latin by K. Sidwell) in the final two weeks. Where space permits, consideration will be given to applicants who wish to attend part of the course only.  Applications will be dealt with on a first-come, first-served basis.

George Ignatieff Theatre, Trinity College, University of Toronto
Saturday, 31 March at 2:00 pm

The Conacher Players, the Trent University Classics Drama Group, will be presenting their production of Euripides' Orestes for one performance only at the George Ignatieff Theatre at Trinity College, University of Toronto, on Saturday 31 March at 2:00 p.m.  The performance is a tribute to Professor Desmond Conacher, after whom the group was recently renamed.  Tickets ($10; $5 for students) are available at the door or can be reserved by e-mailing the director, Martin Boyne <mboyne@trentu.ca>. This production of Orestes played for 11 performances in Peterborough in February.  Professor John Porter (University of Saskatchewan) and the translator, George Kovacs (Memorial University), were in attendance for opening night.  The Classics Drama Group has been producing Greek theatre at Trent since 1994; this is the group's ninth production.
