CACW/CAPN ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2003
CALL FOR PAPERS

The Classical Association of the Canadian West (CACW) and the Classical Association of the Pacific Northwest (CAPN) will hold a joint conference, on March 21 & 22, 2003, to be hosted by the Department of Greek and Roman Studies at the University of Calgary.

The theme of the conference is "Texts and Material Culture: Possibilities and Problems."

The way that we understand this theme is as follows.  Scholarship on the ancient Mediterranean world has traditionally been better at collecting and describing the data at its disposal than in combining and analyzing them.  Strong and often rigid boundaries persist between the classical sub-disciplines of philology, history, and archaeology, and balanced interactions between them are all too rare. Yet such boundaries were unknown in the ancient world, and no single type of evidence can tell us all that we want to know.  This conference will focus on approaches which recognize the conflicting and complementary insights into the past arising from different kinds of evidence.  Basic questions include the value and limitations of textual and archaeological sources, methods for combining them and the challenges involved in doing so, and the implications of a holistic approach for understanding and teaching the ancient Mediterranean world in the 21st century.

Papers relevant to these issues will be given priority in the preparation of the conference program.  Proposals including a short abstract (150-300 words) should be sent preferably by e-mail to <grst@ucalgary.ca>, or by paper mail to CACW/CAPN Conference, Department of Greek & Roman Studies, University of Calgary, 2500 University Drive NW, Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2N 1N4.

Proposals should if possible be sent by September 1st 2002 in order to assist our applications for funding support.

Suggestions for panels and panel-organizers, especially on topics relating to these themes, will also be most welcome.
