B.Ed. Latin
OISE

Salvete omnes!

I wanted to take a moment to thank all the professors who have taken time to write to the powers that be at OISE to express your concern about the future of the B.Ed in Classical Studies: Latin at OISE. I also wanted to encourage you to please spread the word to your colleagues and students that the battle is long from over. We have not heard anything with regard to the future of the programme and so, we need to continue to make our voices heard on this issue if we are to succeed in providing this wonderful opportunity to our Classics majors.

There were four students who were accepted to OISE this year for the B.Ed. in Classical Studies: Latin. They accepted and paid their tuition deposit before they were informed that the course would not be offered. The university has, however, reached a very agreeable compromise which I believe will truly benefit these very worthy and tenacious candidates. OISE is offering the Additional Qualification and Honours Specialist courses in Classical Studies: Latin to teachers across Ontario this July. This course was last run in 1997. OISE has decided to permit these four teacher-candidates to enroll in the AQ course in order to complete their basic Latin pedagogical training so that when they graduate next year; they will receive their B.Ed in Latin and another teachable. I am encouraged by this sign that perhaps we can motivate the powers-that-be at OISE to help us find solutions to our small enrolments.

Please, if you believe in the benefits of the B.Ed. in Classical Studies: Latin, write to Dr. Carol Rolheiser, Assistant Dean and Dr. Jane Gaskell, Dean of OISE in support of the degree. I know that if we continue to lobby and speak with one, very loud and powerful voice, we can make a difference!!
