The Council invites applications from, and nominations of, individuals or groups who would be willing to serve as Editor(s) of the CCB. We do not need to remind you all of the growing importance of the CCB as a means of communication within the Association and beyond.

DESMOND CONACHER SCHOLARSHIP
The Awards Committee of the Classical Association of Canada is pleased to announce that the 2006 Desmond Conacher Scholarship has been awarded to JESSICA HIGGINS, who completed her BA degree this year at the University of Waterloo and is now enrolled in the MA program at the University of Toronto. This year's applications were of a high standard, and the committee wishes to thank all those who submitted applications and those who supported them with advice and references.

The committee also wishes to thank once again those who have helped to establish the scholarship fund and who continue to make donations which will ensure the sustainability and value of the award.

Greek and Roman History

The College of the Humanities at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Greek and Roman History at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2007. The BA in Classics is housed in the College of the Humanities (see www.carleton.ca/chum/ or http://www.carleton.ca/classics). We seek an outstanding scholar with a PhD and a record of demonstrated excellence in both teaching and research. The successful applicant will be committed to undergraduate teaching, including introductory survey and thematic courses. He/she may be involved at some point in the ArtsOne program (see www.carleton.ca/artsone/ ). Applicants should have primary expertise in the social / political history of ancient Greece, although the candidate should also be able to teach Roman history, and the ability to teach both the Greek and Latin languages will be essential. Faculty members at Carleton are expected to participate in the life of the academic community and to seek external grants in order to develop and support a program of research leading to significant peer-reviewed publications. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. However, the applications of Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Post-doctoral Fellowship in Roman Archaeology, 2007-2008

With funding from the Canada Research Council (CRC) Chair in Roman Archaeology, the Department of Classics, University of Manitoba, will offer a one-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Roman Archaeology to commence July 1, 2007. This residential Postdoctoral Fellowship will have an annual value of $40,000 Canadian. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to undertake an independent research project dealing with a topic in Roman Archaeology or Art. The supervisor of this postdoctoral fellowship is Dr. Lea Stirling, CRC Chair in Roman Archaeology (Tier 2), whose interests encompass both archaeology and ancient art. Applicants should be not more than three years beyond their completed PhD; candidates with a defense scheduled by May 2007 are welcome to apply.

The Postdoctoral fellow will also have the opportunity to teach up to 6 credits for additional remuneration subject to the availability of funds and the needs of the Department of Classics.

Qualified scholars may apply by sending a letter and a description of their proposed research project and arrange for three confidential letters of reference to be sent to:

8-WEEK INTENSIVE LATIN AND GREEK SUMMER SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK, IRELAND
July 2nd – August 23rd 2007

The Department of Classics offers an intensive 8-week summer school for beginners with parallel courses in Latin and Greek. The courses are primarily aimed at postgraduate students in diverse disciplines who need to acquire a knowledge of either of the languages for further study and research, and at teachers whose schools would like to reintroduce Latin and Greek into their curriculum.


In each language 6 weeks will be spent completing the basic grammar and a further 2 weeks will be spent reading simple, unadapted texts.

ONE YEAR DIPLOMA IN LATIN OR GREEK
University College Cork, Ireland

The Department of Classics is offering, in conjunction with its intensive 8-week Summer School in Latin and Greek, the chance for students to acquire Ancient Greek or Latin from scratch to the level of a Bachelor’s degree in just one year. The course is aimed primarily at postgraduate students in diverse disciplines who need to acquire knowledge of either of the languages for further study and research, and at teachers whose schools would like to reintroduce Latin and Greek into their curriculum.

The course starts on July 2nd 2007 and consists of two parts. Part A requires completion of the Summer School programme (25 ECTS credits). Part B consists of a total of 9 second and third year courses worth a total of 50ECTS credits which would be completed over the Autumn and Winter semesters here in Cork. The courses cover a variety of authors as well as a more detailed examination of grammar. One course running over both semesters is devoted to reading tailored to each student’s need.

Call for papers and posters for the “Bacchus at Brock: Third International Interdisciplinary Wine Conference” to be held at Brock University on June 7, 8, 9, 2007.

The Conference consists of three basic tracks:
The Culture of Wine (including history and culture of wine from the earliest times to the present)
The Science and Technology of Wine
The Business of Wine

The conference includes sessions in each of the three tracks, tasting workshops, integrative sessions and opportunities for wine/culinary experiences in the Niagara Bench and Niagara-on-the-Lake viticulture sub-regions.
