[1] Association Announcements

From:  Kelly Olson  kolson2@uwo.ca

Dear members of the CAC Women's Network,

Due to a technical error involving a switch in mailing list-care programs a few months ago at Western, all the names have been deleted from my master WN mailing list. To be re-added to the list, please send an email to kolson2@uwo.ca with 'subscribe WN' in the subject line. Then I will re-construct our mailing list from scratch. If you know of anyone not on the CAC mailing list who was formerly on our WN list, could you send me a note and I will drop them a line.

The Department of Classics at Brock University wishes to announce a special lecture and graduate student award in memory of Danielle A. Parks (Oct. 18, 1965?July 31, 2007). Danielle was professor in the Department of Classics at Brock University from July 2001 until her untimely death from leukemia earlier this year. Her research focused on the island of Cyprus.

A SPECIAL LECTURE IN MEMORY OF DANIELLE A. PARKS
http://www.niagaraaia.netfirms.com/lectures.htm

Prof. Stuart Swiny, Dept. of Anthropology, University at Albany, State University of New York "Of Cows, Copper, Corners and Cult: the Cypriot Bronze Age in Perspective"

Prof. Swiny will discuss some of the recent discoveries and advances in our understanding of the Cypriot Bronze Age (c. 2300-1100 BC). He will address a number of interrelated themes, including the (re)introduction of cattle to the island, the appearance of a new architectural tradition, the development of the copper industry, and the nature of cultic practice, drawing on evidence from his
excavations of the site of Sotira-Kaminoudhia.

Jan. 27, 2008, 3 pm Academic South Hall (AS) 215, Brock University.  This event is co-sponsored by the Brock University Archaeological Society, the Niagara chapter of the AIA, and the Department of Classics.

THE DANIELLE A. PARKS MEMORIAL AWARD
http://www.brocku.ca/classics/danielle_parks.php

Danielle and some colleagues initiated an endowed fund a few years ago with the intention of creating a new award to allow Brock Classics graduate students to travel to the Mediterranean to pursue study
abroad and fieldwork opportunities.

This new award is being renamed in memory of Danielle and will serve as a tribute to her contributions at Brock. It will be a fitting legacy for the passion that Danielle had for study in the Mediterranean.

Friends, family and colleagues are invited to make contributions to this fund in memory of Danielle. All contributions will be matched dollar for dollar by the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Brock University. Contributions can be made to Brock University (with the notation "Danielle Parks Memorial") at: http://www.brocku.ca/donorrelations/pdf/pledge_form_05.pdf. U.S. based alumni and their relatives can make donations directly to the University under the Canada-United States Income Tax Convention. All other American citizens or residents should direct their gifts to "The Friends of Brock University" a 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization recognized under the US Internal Revenue Code. For more information on giving to Brock University through the Friends of Brock University, Inc., please call (905) 688-5550, ext. 4190 or e-mail: smurphy@brocku.ca

This new award will be made for the first time in the 2007-2008 academic year thanks to bridging funds from the Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Brock University.

The Iklaina Excavation is seeking students and volunteers for the 2008 season.  Iklaina is a Mycenaean town identified in the Linear B tablets from Pylos as a-pu2, one of the district capitals of the Hither Province (AJA 2006, pp. 205-228).  The project includes excavation,  travel to the major sites and museums in the Peloponnese, and evening classes and seminars on Greek culture, history, and archaeology.  Students can receive 6 credits through the department of Anthropology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis; volunteers on an auditing basis are also welcome to apply. Participants may choose one of two sessions (May 31-June 17 or June 17-July 4).  Applications will be accepted until April 1, 2008 or until the project is filled.  All relevant information, including application forms and registration instructions, can be found at the project website, www.iklaina.org.
