CHOOSING THE LOCATION FOR THE CAC/SCEC ANNUAL MEETING IN 2013

As members are aware, CAC/SCEC Council has established a basic calendar that identifies the regions in which the Association would prefer, all things being equal, to hold its Annual Meetings. In addition, it has decided to issue an invitation three and a half years prior to the meeting date to all Classics departments and programmes in the identified region to volunteer to host the Annual Meeting. Council will then evaluate the responses to this invitation and make a decision on the location three years in advance of the meeting date.

The preferred region for the 2013 meeting will be the PRAIRIES or WEST.

On behalf of Council, I would formally like to invite all Classics departments and  programmes in the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia to consider hosting the Annual Meeting in May 2013. All interested departments or programmes are asked to write briefly to the President (at president@cac-scec.ca) as soon as possible and before JANUARY 15, 2010 at the latest to indicate their willingness to host the Annual Meeting in 2013.

Council asks that potential hosts provide a brief rationale why their particular department/ programme is interested in hosting the meeting and well placed to do so. Are there any factors which would make a meeting at their institution in the given year particularly appropriate? Would their university be willing to provide support (both financial and logistical) for such a venture? Are there suitable accommodations available (both on-campus residence rooms and moderately priced hotels) in easy reach of the proposed meeting location?

Potential volunteers might usefully consult the Guidelines for Annual Meeting document (in English and in French) posted on the CAC/SCEC website:
http://cac- scec.ca/pdf/directives_congres_annuel.pdf.  As President, I would be more than happy to discuss this matter informally with any department or programme prior to their expressing a formal interest in hosting such a meeting. Please feel free to contact me at president@cac-scec.ca.

Council plans to discuss possible locations for the 2013 Annual Meetings at its next Council meeting (in late February/early March 2010) and to make a firm decision before the Annual Meeting at Laval in May 2010 at the latest.

With all best wishes,

Jonathan Edmondson
President, CAC/SCEC (2008-10)

Cordialement,

Jonathan Edmondson
President, CAC/SCEC (2008-10)

Call for Papers for the Women’s Network/Réseau des Femmes panel at the Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of Canada,
May 11-13, 2010, Québec City, QC

Exploring Equity in Antiquity

In honour of the formation of an Equity Committee as part of the CAC/SCEC, the theme for this year’s panel sponsored by the Women’s Network/Réseau des Femmes is “Exploring Equity in Antiquity.” We invite submissions that explore questions regarding the existence and nature of gender equality in the ancient Mediterranean world. Did equity in the modern sense of the concept exist in antiquity or is the notion of ‘separate but equal’ a more productive way of thinking about the question? To what degree was there equity in private or public spheres in areas such as religion, domestic and family life, euergetism, commerce and trade, creative endeavours (e.g., music, poetry and art) and other spheres of activity? How was gender equity affected by other means of differentiation such as juridical status, socio-economic status, age, or ethnicity? To what extent did these either facilitate or compromise attempts to achieve equity? Contributions might also examine the representation of men and women in literature, mythology and art, as well as efforts by classicists in the 19th and 20th centuries to achieve equity in the area of scholarship (for example, the struggle of female classicists to gain professional recognition).

This call for papers is meant to be suggestive rather than exclusive. We welcome papers that consider the theme from a variety of perspectives and sources of evidence (textual, visual, and material).

Please submit abstracts 300 words in length by 15 January 2010 directly to the website for the Annual Meeting (http://www.evenements.fl.ulaval.ca/index.php/SCEC-CAC/2010) under the “Proposal Submission” link and indicate that the abstract is for the Women’s Network/Réseau des femmes panel. http://www.evenements.fl.ulaval.ca/index.php/SCEC-CAC/http://www.evenements.fl.ulaval.ca/index.php/SCEC-CAC/2010
