CAC COUNCIL
SEEKS NEW ORGANIZER(S) FOR THE CAC CENTRAL LECTURE TOUR
After five years
of excellent work, our colleagues Allison Glazebrook (Brock
University) and Louis L'Allier (Thorneloe/Laurentian
University) have announced their desire to step down as organizers of the CAC
Central Lecture Tour after the 2010 tour. On behalf of the Association, I would
like to thank them both most warmly for their contribution to this important
aspect of the Association's activities. We are all most grateful for their
generosity in volunteering their time and talents.
As a result, CAC
Council is now looking to appoint a member (or members) to replace them as the
Organizers of the Central Tour. Ideally Council would like to reach a decision
on this during the Annual Conference at Université Laval. This would allow the
new organizer(s) to be party to the organizational work of Professors Glazebrook
and L'Allier in the period leading up, during and immediately following the 2010
tour, permitting a seamless transition.
Interested
colleagues may wish to consult Allison Glazebrook (aglazebrook@brocku.ca) and/or Louis
L'Allier (llallier@laurentian.ca) by e-mail to
gain a sense of the work involved.
Those interested
in volunteering to take over this important role should then e-mail Jonathan
Edmondson (president@cac-scec.ca) to express
their formal interest, if possible, before 1 May 2010.

CAC UNDERGRADUATE ESSAY CONTEST,
2009-10
The deadline for this year's CAC
Undergraduate Essay Competition is August 31, 2010. Promising essays or projects
on any aspect of Classics submitted for a course at any level in the Fall-Winter
2009-10 or Summer 2010 sessions are welcome. Please direct any questions or
submissions to Bonnie MacLachlan, Dept. of Classical Studies, University of Western Ontario
(bmacl@uwo.ca).
The Undergraduate Essay Contests are designed to
showcase
the research of undergraduate students taking Classics courses at Canadian
universities. Students do not need to be Classics majors to submit their work:
essays written for any undergraduate course with classical content at a Canadian
university during the previous academic year are eligible. Two separate
competitions are held each year: a junior contest, for papers submitted by
junior undergraduates in survey courses where no specialized knowledge of
Classics is required, and a senior contest, for papers written by undergraduates
in specialized upper-level courses in Classics. A separate set of prizes is
awarded for each of these competitions.
Rules
Essays may be
submitted by either the student or the instructor. They may be up to 50 pages in
length. Up to two separate essays may be submitted for any one student, but no
individual will be eligible for more than one award in any particular
year.
Essays should submitted as they were submitted for the course,
without revisions or corrections (with the exception of typographical errors)
and with no comments or corrections by the instructor. *The cover page should
contain only the title of the paper: nowhere in the essay proper should any
information be offered that might identify the student, the instructor, or the
institution.* A separate sheet should be submitted with the name of the
student, his/her institution, and the submitting instructor (if
applicable).
Entries should also indicate whether the essay is to be
judged in the junior or the senior contest. If you are not certain which
category might be appropriate, please include a brief description of the course
for which the essay was written.
Judging is based on both form and
content. The winning essays in both contests must be well-written, clearly
organized, and free from errors of grammar and syntax. In the junior contest,
winners usually have demonstrated a solid understanding of the sources pertinent
to their topic and have covered their chosen subject thoroughly. In the senior
contest, winners are expected to have made good use of both ancient and modern
sources and to have offered new insights on their chosen topic.
Other
types of submissions (for example, original works of fiction, video productions,
games) will also be considered should the adjudicators judge them appropriate.
All such submissions must be based on and deal creatively with ancient source
material.
Prizes
Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning
entries in both the junior and senior competition, and the winners will have the
option of posting their entries on the CAC website. First prize: $150; Second
prize: $100; Third prize: $50

La date limite du concours d'essais de la SCEC est le 31

tous les domaines des études classiques rédigés dans le cadre d'un cours pendant
l'année scolaire 2009-10 (y compris les cours de l'été 2010) sont éligibles.

Les concours d'essais pour étudiants de premier cycle ont
pour but de mettre en valeur les travaux de recherche d'étudiants qui suivent
des cours de premier cycle en études classiques dans une université canadienne.
Les participants ne doivent pas obligatoirement être inscrits dans un programme
d'études classiques: tous les essais rédigés dans le cadre d'un cours ayant
trait aux études classiques, dans une université canadienne au cours de la
dernière année scolaire, sont éligibles. Chaque année ont lieu deux concours
distincts. Le concours de niveau "junior" récompense des étudiants de premier
cycle pour des travaux rédigés dans le cadre de cours d'initiation, pour
lesquels aucune connaissance spécifique dans le domaine des études classiques
n'est requise; le concours de niveau "senior" prend en compte des travaux
d'étudiants de premier cycle écrits dans le cadre de cours spécialisés en études
classiques. Les prix sont attribués de façon indépendante pour chacun des deux
concours.
Règlements
L'essai peut être soumise par l'étudiants
ou son professeur. Les textes doivent compter au maximum 50 pages. Chaque
étudiant peut soumettre jusqu’à deux essais différents, mais aucun concurrent ne
sera récompensé plus d'une fois dans la même année.
Les essais doivent
être soumis tels qu'ils ont été présentés dans le cadre du cours, sans révision
ou corrections (à l'exception des fautes typographiques), et sans commentaires
ou corrections de la part du professeur. *La page couverture ne doit contenir
que le titre du travail : l'essai ne doit contenir aucune information permettant
d'identifier l'étudiant, le professeur ou l'institution.* Le nom de
l'étudiant, son institution et le nom du professeur ayant soumis l'essai (s'il y
a lieu) doivent être fournis sur une feuille séparée.
Ce document doit
également indiquer si l'essai est soumis au concours de niveau junior ou senior.
En cas de doute, veuillez inclure une brève description du cours pour lequel
l'essai a été rédigé.
Les travaux seront jugés à la fois sur la forme et
sur le contenu. Les essais retenus pour les deux concours devront être bien
écrits, structurés de façon claire, et devront être exempts d'erreurs
grammaticales et syntaxiques. Les gagnants du concours de niveau junior des
années passées ont démontré une compréhension approfondie des études pertinentes
à leur sujet qui fut couvert de façon minutieuse. Les gagnants du concours de
niveau senior devront avoir fait preuve d'un bon usage des sources, tant
modernes qu'anciennes, dans la rédaction de leur essai qui présentera un
caractère innovateur.
Les autres types de travaux soumis (par exemple:
récits de fiction originaux, productions vidéo, jeux) seront aussi pris en
considération, à condition d'être jugés appropriés par le jury. Le contenu des
travaux de ce type devra s'appuyer sur les sources anciennes et en traiter de
façon créative.
Prix
Des prix en argent seront attribués aux
gagnants des concours de niveau junior et senior; les gagnants auront la
possibilité d'exposer leurs travaux sur le site internet de la SCÉC. Premier
prix: 150$; Deuxième prix: 100$; Troisième prix: 50$

CONGRÈS ANNUEL POUR LA MEILLEURE COMMUNICATION PAR UN ÉTUDIANT DE DEUXIÈME OU
TROISIÈME CYCLE
La première remise d'un prix annuel pour la
meilleure
communication d'un
étudiant de deuxième ou troisième cycle lors du congrès annuel de la SCÉC aura
lieu au congrès qui sera tenu à l'Université Laval, Québec, du 11 au 13
mai 2010.
- Le
concours est ouvert à tous les étudiants membres de la SCÉC et inscrits à un
programme de maîtrise ou de doctorat. Ils doivent être membres en règle de la
SCÉC (donc avoir payé leur cotisation pour l'année en cours) et leur
communication devra avoir été acceptée pour présentation au congrès annuel par
le comité organisateur responsable du programme.
- Les
étudiants doivent soumettre le texte de leur communication en format
électronique (PDF ou MS-Word) à la présidente du Comité de sélection (Alison
Keith, Professeur, Dépt. d'Études
classiques, Université de Toronto: akeith@chass.utoronto.ca)
avant la date limite du vendredi 23 avril. Il devrait s'agir
essentiellement de la version écrite de la communication qui sera présentée au
congrès et non pas d'une
version plus longue ou élaborée. Toutefois, les références aux sources anciennes
et aux discussions des modernes devraient être incorporées aux endroits
appropriés dans la soumission électronique.
- Le
Comité de sélection choisira normalement trois finalistes. Les membres du Comité
assisteront ensuite aux présentations de ces finalistes lors du congrès. La
qualité de la présentation orale sera un critère important pour décider du
gagnant. Les candidats seront informés seulement après leur présentation
qu'ils
sont parmi les finalistes.
- La
présentation du prix au gagnant sera faite lors du banquet de cloture du
congrès. Les étudiants qui participeront au concours sont donc encouragés de
s'inscrire au banquet longtemps à l'avance. La SCÉC remboursera en
entier aux finalistes le prix de leur inscription au banquet.
- Un
prix de $100 et un certificat seront remis au gagnant. Son nom sera ensuite
annoncé dans le BCÉC.
CAC
PRIZE FOR THE BEST PAPER BY A GRADUATE STUDENT
AT THE ANNUAL MEETING
The annual Prize for the best paper given by a
graduate student at the CAC Annual Meeting will be awarded for the first time at
the Annual Meeting at Université Laval, Québec, 11-13 May 2010.
- All
student members of the CAC currently studying in an M.A. or Ph.D. graduate
programme are eligible to enter. They must be members of the CAC in good
standing (i.e., with their current year's
dues paid up) and their paper must have been accepted by the programme
organizing committee for presentation at the CAC's
Annual Meeting.
- Students should submit a written version
of their paper in electronic
format (PDF or MS-Word) to the Chair of the CAC Awards Committee (Professor
Alison Keith, Dept. of Classics, University of Toronto:
akeith@chass.utoronto.ca)
before the deadline of Friday 23 April. It should be in essence the
written version of the oral paper to be delivered at the conference. Students
should not submit a longer, more developed version of their paper. However,
references to ancient sources and scholarly discussions should be incorporated,
as appropriate, into the written version of the paper submitted.
- The
CAC Awards Committee will establish a short-list normally of three papers.
Members of the Awards Committee will then attend the short-listed papers during
the course of the Annual Meeting. The quality of oral delivery of the paper will
be an important criterion in determining the winner. Short-listed candidates
will be advised after giving their papers that they are in the running for the
prize.
- The
announcement of the winner will be made and the prize presented at the Banquet
at the close of the conference. Graduate students who enter the competition are
thus encouraged to sign up for the banquet well in advance of the conference.
Those short-listed will be reimbursed the full cost of their banquet ticket by
the CAC.
A
prize of $100 will be awarded to the winner, along with a certificate. The
winner's
name will also be announced on the CCB.

ASGLE FIRST NORTH AMERICAN CONGRESS OF GREEK AND LATIN EPIGRAPHY

January 2011, San Antonio, Texas
The American
Society of Greek and Latin Epigraphy (ASGLE) invites abstracts for the First
North American Epigraphical Congress, to be held on January 5th, 2011 in San
Antonio, Texas at the Marriott Riverwalk, over the course of a single day,
immediately before the Joint Annual Meeting of the American Philological
Association (APA) and the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA). The topic
will be broadly defined as Greek and Latin Epigraphy.
Abstracts will be
adjudicated anonymously by a committee of ASGLE; they should include the title
but not the author's name and they should not be longer than one double-spaced
page. There is a limit of one abstract per person. The abstracts themselves,
along with a completed abstract submission form, should be sent electronically
as pdf files to: Nora Dimitrova, Vice-President, ASGLE, at nmd5@cornell.edu. The deadline
is June 15, 2010.
Registration for the Congress must be made online
here. The
registration fee before December 1, 2010 is $35 for student and $50 for
non-student participants, which includes a group dinner. After December 1, 2010
the rate will be $50 for students and $70 for non-students. ASGLE full members
receive a $10 discount and ASGLE student/retirees a $5.00 discount. To become a
member of ASGLE, see here. There will be
a stipend available for at least one student whose abstract is
accepted.
In the future, these congresses are expected to be held
immediately before the APA/AIA meetings. This should have the additional benefit
of attracting a large number of Classicists and archaeologists to the audience
of the congress and promoting epigraphy among graduate students attending the
meetings.
Interested scholars from all countries are encouraged to
participate.

ancient Greek and Roman world. Topics may include but are not limited to:

University of Cyprus invites applications for a doctoral research scholarship in
the study of Late Antique Cyprus made available through the generosity of the
Leventis Foundation in the Memory of Constantine Leventis.
The grant
payable to a single student for the 2010-11 academic year will be Euros 10,000
per annum for the 36 month duration of the award. The University will also cover
the full amount of fees for the same period. The successful PhD candidate will
also be able to benefit from a stipend of Euros 3,000 that the A.G. Leventis
Foundation offered to the Open University Library for the purchase of books
related to the subject of the scholarship.
The Scholarship is offered
for the support of research into any aspect of Cyprus in late antiquity,
including history, art and archaeology, language, theology and literature. The
dissertation can be written in either Greek or English. The successful candidate
is expected to be actively involved in the research activities of the Programme.
