Conventiculum Buffaloniense
Spoken Latin Workshop, June 28-30, Buffalo, NY
The third annual
Conventiculum Buffaloniense will take place at the University at Buffalo (UB)
north campus in Buffalo, NY from Monday, June 28 through Wednesday, June 30,
2010.
Participants in the workshop will engage in immersive active-Latin
activities that provide practice in basic expressions for oral communication.
The workshop organizers are: Neil Coffee, Associate Professor of Classics at UB
and Anna Andresian, teacher at Sage Ridge School, Independent Day School, Reno,
NV.
The session schedule is in development, but will be modeled on that
of last year, including an opening night dinner on the first day (Monday, June
28). For more information and to register, please visit the workshop's web page.
Participants are asked to send in their registration forms by May 15. (NB:
Registrations will be accepted past the deadline of May 15, but participants are
encouraged to register as soon as possible.)

The Association of Ancient
Historians announces the themes and location of their 2011 Conference and issues
the following Call For Papers.
The event will be held at and hosted by
Mercyhurst College, Erie PA Thursday May 5 through Sunday May 8, 2011. Erie's
airport is served through Detroit, Philly, and Cleveland.
The Thematic
title of the 2011 meeting is "Adaptation in the Ancient World." Papers are now
solicited in the following areas of inquiry:
**Maritime Interconnectivity in
the Mediterranean (Chair, Elizabeth Green of Brock University)
**Greek and
Roman Historiography (Chair, John Marincola of Florida State
University)
**Ancient Political Theory (Chair, Ryan Balot of the University
of Toronto)
**Tyranny and Response (Chair, Sian Lewis of the University of
St. Andrews )
**New Directions in the History of War (Chair, Lee Brice of
Western Illinois University)
**Swords and Sandals: The Ancient World in
Modern Media (Chair, Rachael Goldman of CUNY)
**Religious Innovation and
Empire (Chair, Robert von Thaden of Mercyhurst College)
**Women and Religion
in the Ancient World (Chair, Michele Salzman of UCR)
**Egypt (Chair, Carlis
White of Slippery Rock University)

**Open panel(s) for strong papers in other

Individual papers--20-30 minutes long--will be
delivered in plenary session, with sufficient time for Chair response and
audience comment. Please remit one page
abstract and recent Vita by email to the chief organizer, Randall S. Howarth, at
rhowarth@mercyhurst.edu or by regular post to the same at Mercyhurst College,
501 East 38th street, Erie PA 16546.
Abstracts should be received by November 1 so that sufficient time
remains to distribute to the appropriate chairs for comment and for the
publication of winning titles in the December edition of the AAH
Newsletter.
The organizers will adhere to the traditional practices of
the AAH by
***having a welcome reception on the opening Thursday
night
***holding all sessions in plenary format
***providing a banquet on
Saturday night
In addition, Mercyhurst College is pleased to announce
that Professor Lawrence Tritle of Loyola Marymount University, will give a Key
note address on the Friday night in Mercyhurst College's Performing Arts
center. The AAH awards travel

Call for Papers -- Ancient
Drama in Performance: Theory and Practice
Ancient Drama in Performance:
Theory and Practice will coincide with the 2010 Randolph College Greek Play:
Euripides' Hecuba, an original-practices production. The play and response to it
will be the
culmination of a day of scholarly and practical exchanging of ideas on ancient
theatre. We are inviting proposals from
scholars and practitioners of all levels for papers on topics to do with ancient
drama in performance, including but not restricted to the staging, texts,
design, repertory, personnel, and the social impact of plays in the ancient
Greek and Roman world, as well as of plays as re-performed in the modern
world. Papers will be delivered in an
outdoor Greek theatre (or a round indoor space if it rains), which means that
papers that deal with original practices in some way would find a comfortable
setting, but all topics concerned with the plays as a practice are welcome.
Presenters who would like to demonstrate
their performance ideas will be provided with student actors (with or without
masks), with whom arrangements can be made prior to the meeting. Papers are
limited to 10 minutes
(presentation without actors) and to 13 minutes (presentations with student
actors).* Presenters should be aware
that they will hear the sound of a drum when two minutes remain and will exit
pursued by a Fury when time is out.
The conference will feature a keynote
address by Kenneth Reckford, and a response to Hecuba by Mary-Kay
Gamel.

June 2010 (please note new deadline).

The Association of Ancient
Historians is currently gathering information for a new "Directory of Ancient
Historians." They have asked me to collect information for those in Canada who
consider themselves ancient historians and wish to have their information
included in the book. Please forward the following information (as you wish it
to appear in the directory) to me in an email (leanne.bablitz@ubc.ca) with the
subject heading "AAH directory":
- your name;
- your rank/position;
- where you received your PhD;
- your work mailing address;
- your
work phone;
- home phone (if you wish);
- your fax;
- your email
address;
- your web page address; and
- your research interests.
(Please use short phrases - can be multiple, but no more than three). If you
know of someone who may not receive the CCB, please pass this along to them. We
obviously want to reach as many historians as possible! The deadline for
submissions is July 31st, 2010.

Sabbatical/Research Housing in
Italy
Availability for our research home in Lucca, Italy has expanded for
the coming academic year: from early November 2010 to mid June 2011. It will be
available again from August 15, 2011 to June 15, 2012.
Our
child-friendly, recently renovated home has 880 square feet inside and a
400-square-foot terrace with excellent vistas. There are two bedrooms and a
studio with sofa bed, plus a spacious kitchen/living room and bathroom. We are
ideally equipped for research (high-speed internet, satellite tv, fax, voltage
transformers, etc.). We have air conditioning and heating, dishwasher and
washing machine. Our tenants are entitled to a 10% discount on Italian language
courses.
We seek long-term renters, though we will entertain requests for
shorter term rentals, particularly in the summer and spring, in case a longer
term rental does not materialize. We do not rent for periods of less than two
