Sabbatical/Research Housing in Italy

My wife and I try to make our research home in Lucca, Italy available for other academics when we are not using it. We seek renters for our child friendly recently renovated apartment in Lucca, Italy. Our home has 880 square feet inside and a 400-square-foot terrace with excellent vistas. There are two bedrooms and a studio with sofa bed, plus a spacious kitchen/living room and a bathroom. We are ideally equipped for research (high-speed internet, satellite tv, printer/scanner, voltage transformers, etc.). We have air conditioning and heating, dishwasher and washing machine. We are normally able to negotiate a 10% discount on Italian language courses for our tenants. The apartment will next be available from November 15, 2010 to April 30, 2010, and again from September 1, 2011 to June 7, 2012.

We seek long-term renters, though we will entertain requests for shorter term rentals, particularly in the summer and spring, in case a longer term rental does not materialize. We do not rent for periods of less than two weeks. For more information and photos, see:
www.film.queensu.ca/Burke/Lucca.html. Please direct any questions you may have to Frank Burke, burkef@queensu.ca, or Annette Burfoot, burfoota@queensu.ca.

New: The Department of History and Classical Studies, McGill University

The study of Classics and Ancient History at McGill University was vigorously rebuilt over the past years. As a consequence of its successful revival, and to fully acknowledge it at the University level, the Department of History departmental designation was changed to 'The Department of History and Classical Studies' in May 2010.

Established in 1834, Classics has a thriving tradition in McGill's Faculty of Arts. Unfortunately, the 1990s witnessed the gradual disintegration of the discipline. In 1997, the department was closed and the remaining faculty transferred to the Department of History, where Classics continued to offer selected undergraduate degree options. Since 2005, with the tremendous support of the Faculty of Arts and the Department of History, a systematic relaunch was propelled. The revival marks an all new chapter in the history of Classical Studies at McGill.

The new Classical Studies branch of the department comprises seven full-time members, two adjunct appointments and a corresponding number of contributing faculty from other departments. It offers the full slate of undergraduate degree options in Ancient History and Classics and also a Minor in Modern Hellenic Studies. Graduate studies include M.A. programs in Ancient History, Classics and Modern Hellenic Studies, and a PhD in Ancient History. In addition to the department's progressive funding scheme, funds are available through professors' sponsored research and also an extensive stock of prizes and awards. From: Leanne Bablitz

The Association of Ancient Historians is currently gathering information for a new "Directory of Ancient Historians." They have asked me to collect information for those in Canada who consider themselves ancient historians (including emeriti and emeritae) and wish to have their information included in the book. Please forward the following information (as you wish it to appear in the directory) to me in an email (leanne.bablitz@ubc.ca) with the subject heading "AAH directory":
- your name
- your rank/position
- where you received your PhD
- your work mailing address
- your work phone
- home phone (if you wish)
- your fax
- your email address
- your web page address
- your research interests (please use short phrases; can be multiple, but no more than three.)

If you know of someone who may not receive the CCB, please pass this along to them. We obviously want to reach as many historians as possible! We are now past the deadline, but are eager to try and include as many people as possible.
