University of Toronto at Mississauga
Lecturer – Classics (Limited-term appointment)

The Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a one-year term-limited appointment in Classics at the rank of Lecturer. Candidates must have earned a PhD in a related discipline by the time of the appointment, which will begin on September 1, 2012 and end on August 31, 2013.

The successful applicant will have a sufficient breadth of training and interests to teach a range of courses in Classics at the introductory through advanced levels. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will join a vibrant intellectual community of world-class scholars at Canada's largest university. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is one of the most fascinating, diverse and “liveable” places in the world. Historical Studies at the Mississauga campus is a transdisciplinary department that provides students with a globally-framed historical education that encompasses programs in History of Religions, History, Classical Civilization, Diaspora and Transnational Studies, and the Study of Women and Gender.

Applicants must apply using the online application form available via the University of Toronto Academic Careers Opportunities website at www.jobs.utoronto.ca/faculty.htm (Position #1200418). Instructions for using the system are available at www.jobs.utoronto.ca/faculty/instruct.htm. Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, sample of academic writing, statement of research interests, all academic transcripts, and a teaching portfolio (i.e. teaching evaluations, sample syllabi, descriptions of teaching strategies and innovations, etc.). Arrangements should be made for three letters of reference, at least one of which must comment on the applicant’s teaching abilities, to be sent to hsjobs@utoronto.ca. This email address may also be used to send in additional documents that cannot be accommodated using the website application system, or for questions regarding the position. Please include the candidate’s name and “Classics Search” in the subject line.

All applications must be received by June 20, 2012. For further information about the UTM Department of Historical Studies, please visit http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/historical-studies/.

The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its community. The University especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
