IN MEMORIAM
DUNCAN FISHWICK
12 May 1929 – 6 August 2015

From Jonathan Edmondson

It is with great sadness that the Classical Association/Société canadienne des Études classiques must report the news of the recent death of one of the Association’s most distinguished members, Duncan Fishwick, FRSC, FRHistS, FSA, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta and, from 2010 to 2013, Honorary President of our Association. Professor Fishwick died in Edmonton on 6 August aged 86 after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved wife Birgit (“Bibi”), whom he met in Venice in 1961 and married in Västerås, Sweden, in 1963, and their three children, Birgitta, Peter and Steven.

Duncan Fishwick was one of Canada’s most distinguished Roman historians, for many years the leading world expert on the Roman imperial cult in the Latin West. Born at Adlington in central Lancashire in the U.K., he completed his B.A. at Manchester University and then his M.A. at Oxford University before obtaining a D. Litt. from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and a Litt.D. from the University of Manchester. In 1956 he was attracted to Canada to take up a position as lecturer in the Department of Classics at McGill before moving one year later to Toronto, where he taught for seven years as Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Toronto. In 1964 he headed east to St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where as Associate Professor he chaired the Classics Department and revamped the Classics curriculum. Seven years later, the West beckoned and he moved to the University of Alberta at Edmonton, where he spent the rest of his very fruitful career until his retirement from teaching in 1994 and then a highly productive twenty-one years of research post-retirement. He was promoted to Professor in 1975 and then to the prestigious rank of University Professor in 1986. At the U. of A. in addition to his teaching duties, he played an active role in administration in the Department of Classics, the Faculty of Arts and the wider University, including a five-year term as Chair of Classics from 1987 to 1992.

During his career he supervised a number of M.A. and Ph.D. students who have made a mark in our profession. These include his M.A. student Brent Shaw (Professor of Classics at Princeton University, three of whose first articles were co-written with his M.A. supervisor), and among his Ph.D. students Chris Simpson (now retired from Wilfrid Laurier University) and Bernard Kavanagh (currently Associate Professor in the Classics Department at Queen’s University).

Duncan Fishwick is best known for his detailed, painstaking and ground-breaking work on the Roman imperial cult, especially in the Hispanic and Gallic provinces, Africa and Britain. Author of more than a hundred articles in leading journals (for instance, JRS, Historia, Britannia, ZPE, Epigraphica, AJP, and, of course, the Association’s Phoenix, in which he published five articles, most recently in vol. 68.3-4, 2014), he made the study of Roman emperor worship his particular focus, and his influential series of volumes, published by Brill, The Imperial Cult in the Latin West, are absolutely required reading on the subject. In three parts, ICLW comprises eight separate volumes, published between 1987 and 2005. Marked by a rigorous inductive method and sane good judgment, his published work has led to major advances in our understanding of emperor worship – its cults, cult personnel and cult spaces – across the western provinces. Some of his most important articles are now collected in two recent volumes in the Variorum Reprints series: Cult, Ritual, Divinity and Belief in the Roman World (2012) and Cult Places and Cult Personnel in the Roman Empire (2014). Another major monograph is currently in press entitled Precinct, Temple and Altar in Roman Spain: Studies on the Imperial Monuments at Mérida and Tarragona (Ashgate Publishers), which uses the latest archaeological and epigraphic discoveries to advance our understanding of the nature and development of imperial cult spaces in the urban centres of two important Roman colonies and provincial capitals. Indeed, Duncan was active to the last, writing the preface and opening pages of another projected book just before he fell ill this summer.

The quality of Duncan Fishwick’s research and his stature in our field internationally are demonstrated by the series of honours that he was awarded over the course of his career: Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries since 1982, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since 1983, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society since 1986, Correspondant étranger of the Société nationale des Antiquaires de France since 1985, Correspondent of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen since 1986 and since 1991 one of just 50 “correspondants étrangers” of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, one of the five academies that make up the highly prestigious Institut de France (“L’Institut”, as it is often known).

Further testimony to his stature was provided by the distinguished group of scholars who travelled to Edmonton in April 1994 to a conference to mark Duncan’s 65th birthday and his impending retirement from teaching at the University of Alberta. No lesser figures than Géza Alföldy, Ernst Badian, Robert Étienne, Peter Herz, Joyce Reynolds and Robert Turcan gave papers, as well as many others from Canada, the U.S. and Europe, and Robert Étienne gave a memorably elegant and touching tribute to the honorand at the celebratory banquet that closed the conference. The papers were edited for publication by Duncan’s long-time U. of A. colleague, Alastair Small, and published as Subject and Ruler: The Cult of the Ruling Power in Classical Antiquity (JRA Supplement 17, Ann Arbor, 1996).

Alongside his scholarly pursuits, Duncan was an active sportsman. As a cricketer, he was good enough to play in the 1st XI for Manchester University and then for Preston Cricket Club. He played soccer for his university’s 2nd XI and remained an avid and talented low-handicap golfer well past his retirement. He was a frequent traveller in Europe, giving a series of papers in France, for instance, in the 1980s and 1990s. Even late in his career, he still received invitations to major international conferences overseas. He often recalled the pleasure he experienced at the stimulating conferences on the imperial cult at the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano in Mérida (Spain) in 2006 and on Vespasian and the Flavian Empire in Rome in 2009. When he was elected in 2010 as the Association’s Honorary President, he took the responsibilities of the position very seriously and diligently travelled to the Fall and Spring Council Meetings in Toronto and to successive annual congresses in Halifax (2011), London (2012) and Winnipeg (2013) during his three years of service.

Duncan was a modest, methodical and down-to-earth person, with no little sense of wry humour, and these personal qualities are also discernible in the nature of his scholarly work. Thorough and meticulous, he was never one to propose bold, speculative reconstructions. He worked closely, even minutely, with his sources – literary, epigraphic, numismatic or archaeological – and drew sober conclusions that were always grounded in the surviving evidence. He was always willing to defend his often revisionist conclusions with logical, tenacious argument. It is those qualities that will ensure that his major insights into the Roman imperial cult will long outlive him. His published scholarship will remain the essential starting point for all future research on the topic for many years to come. The world of Classics is now much the poorer that Duncan Fishwick is no longer with us. Not just in Canada, but across the world, he will be much missed.

AIEGL REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

From Jonathan Edmondson

Manfred Schmidt, President of the Association Internationale d'Épigraphie Grecque et Latine (AIEGL), has recently sent me as the Canadian member of the Association's Comité a request for information from Canadian researchers about "new epigraphic discoveries, scholarly conferences, new book releases and the like". The deadline for me to send him materials is quite short. So I would appreciate if you could send any relevant information to me at jedmond@yorku.ca as soon as possible and by 13 September at the latest. As the annual programmes of our CAC conferences illustrate, there is much excellent epigraphic work going on in Canada. It would be good if this were well represented in the AIEGL newsletter. Many thanks.

A NEW BOOK

From Tom Banchich

Tom Banchich’s The Lost History of Peter the Patrician: An Account of Rome's Imperial Past from the Age of Justinian (Routledge 2015) ISBN-13: 978-0415516631 ISBN-10: 0415516633, is now available.

Partly through an elimination of a false distinction between Peter and the so-called Anonymus post Dionem and partly through a reconsideration of the palimpsest codex Vaticanus Graecus 73, The Lost History of Peter the Patrician increases the number of fragments of Peter’s History from the eighteen in Müller’s FHG to 215. Historical and historiographical commentary follows translations of the fragments and of parallel passages. The book should be of interest to students of Roman, Late Antique, and Byzantine history and historiography. A limited preview is available here.
