For general information about the next Annual Conference, please consult the December issue of the CCB. A link to the conference website has also been posted on the CAC website (where documents pertaining to the Annual General Meeting will be uploaded in April).

The deadline for submitting an abstract is extended to Friday, January 29, 2016. Still, the organizers would appreciate if you submitted your abstract as early as possible.

Once you reach the Conference website, it is possible to check it out without signing in. You just need to click on “HOME”.

Note that the website will open by default on the French page. You can select “English” in the "LANGUE" menu on the right. By the way, please remember to consult the detailed instructions in the December issue when you submit your abstract: a bug in the program will force you to switch back to French.

Les renseignements généraux concernant le prochain Congrès annuel sont disponibles dans la livraison de décembre du BCÉA. Un lien vers le site du Congrès a aussi été affiché sur le site du Congrès (d'où les documents à l'ordre du l'ordre du jour de l'assemblé générale annuelle seront téléchargeables en avril).

La date limiite de soumission des propositions de communication a été repoussée au vendredi 29 janvier 2016. Les organisateurs vous seraient quand même reconnaissants de soumettre votre proposition aussitôt que possible.

2014–2015 UNDERGRADUATE ESSAY COMPETITION
CONCOURS DE DISSERTATIONS DE PREMIER CYCLE, 2014–2015.

There were 34 submissions to the essay competition this year, a slight decrease from the 40 submissions for the 2014 competition. Of these, 25 were submitted (or assigned) to the junior category, while only nine were submitted (or assigned) to the senior category. In the junior category, 17 submissions came from women; eight from men. In the senior category 8 submission were from men; one from a woman.

There were three submissions in French (all submitted or assigned to the junior category), an increase over the sole essay submitted in French from 2014, but still a disappontingly low number; continued efforts to increase francophone participation would be welcome. Students from 15 universities submitted essays according to the following breakdown:

Dalhousie (5), U.Toronto (4), King’s College, Halifax (4), U.Alberta (3), U.Manitoba (3), Concordia (3), U.Montreal (2), Brock (2), U.Ottawa (2), U.Saskatchewan (1), King’s College, Western (1), U.Victoria (1), McGill (1), U.British Columbia (1), Carleton (1). A number of Ontario universities were absent from representation

Popular topics this year included philosophy and Greek literature, especially tragedy, with reasonable representation in ancient history and a smaller number of essays on art and archaeology. At the junior level, the wide range of excellent submissions made it meaningful to award two honourable mentions (to an interesting archaeological topic and an excellent creative work).

EXTENDED-TERM APPOINTMENT IN ANCIENT GREEK LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND CULTURE

The Department of Classics, Modern Languages and Linguistics invites applications for one extended-term appointment (ETA) in Ancient Greek language, literature and culture. The ideal candidate for this position will have a Ph.D. in Classics with a specialization in Greek, Archaic to Hellenistic, and an active interest in Greek interaction with the Near East, from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period. Additional interests would be welcome in any of the following areas: Indo-European linguistics, the reception of Greek literature, papyrology. The successful candidate will also be responsible for various service activities such as language course coordination, advising, and oversight of the Hellenic Studies Unit. The normal course load per year for an ETA position is seven; however, depending upon the degree of involvement in service, the candidate may receive a course remission.

Applications should consist of a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy/interests, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. The successful applicant must be qualified to teach at the level indicated in the position. Evidence of teaching effectiveness is the key attribute by which qualified candidates are ranked. Applicants should arrange for three letters of reference which address their qualifications for the announced position to be sent directly to:

This position is subject to budgetary approval and need, and is full-time, normally at the rank of Lecturer beginning August 1, 2016. Under the provisions of the current Concordia University Faculty Association Collective Agreement, individuals are initially appointed for a three-year period as per article 12.04 d), with the possibility of re-appointment.

TRAVEL STUDY PROGRAM TO GREECE, MAY 2–22, 2016

The Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of New Brunswick announces a Travel Study Program to GREECE scheduled for May 2–22, 2016. Students from universities and colleges across Canada are invited to participate. The Program –"Of Gods and Men"– develops a new itinerary for UNB. With Dr. James Murray and Dr. William Kerr, students will visit major sites in Athens and the Peloponnese before heading north to see materials and sites associated with Alexander the Great (e.g. Pella, Vergina, Dion, etc). Participation in the Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) & the Society for Classical Studies (SCS):

The French School at Athens, the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece, the Hardt Foundation for the Study of Classical Antiquity in Vandœuvres, near Geneva, in collaboration with Melissa, the Athenian publishing house, will present their activities and publications at the AIA & SCS Joint Annual Meeting at the Hilton Hotel International, San Francisco, January 6 - 9, 2016. Their booths will be situated together in the exhibition hall.

A joint reception will be given at swissnex San Francisco (730 Montgomery, Jackson & Washington) on Thursday, January 7th 2016 from 7:00 pm until 10:30 pm.
