WATERLOO INSTITUTE FOR HELLENISTIC STUDIES
PAROCHIAL POLIS RESEARCH NETWORK
CFP: LOCALISM IN THE HELLENISTIC WORLD

From Sheila Ager

The Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies and the Parochial Polis Research Network at McGill University will jointly host a conference on “Localism in the Hellenistic World” in April 2018. The Hellenistic period is generally seen as a time of expanded horizons and shifting frontiers, with a diffusion of Greek culture throughout the Mediterranean and the Near East unprecedented in any previous era. At the same time, the local world remained a primary frame of reference, however defined or experienced. In the shadow of omnipresent connectivity and exchange, many communities fostered an identity of place. They articulated a particular type of localism. This call for papers invites interested parties working in any field to submit an abstract for a paper exploring the phenomenon of localism in the Hellenistic period. We anticipate participation from scholars working in the areas of political and social history, philology, material culture, religion, philosophy, historical anthropology, and the other sub-disciplines of our field. A public keynote lecture and reception will be held on the evening of the opening day.

Abstracts should be about 300 words in length, and should be submitted electronically to Sheila Ager (sager@uwaterloo.ca) and Hans Beck (hans.beck@mcgill.ca).

Note: The organizers have secured base funding for the event. An application to SSHRC as part of its Connection Grants program is in preparation. If successful, travel and accommodation expenses will be covered in full.

Due date for submission of abstracts: 1 July 2017.

Event date: 26-28 April 2018.

Venue: Delta Hotel, 110 Erb Street West, Waterloo ON N2L 0C6.

CFP: FIDELITY OF FIDES: AUTHENTICITY IN THE CLASSICAL WORLD
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO, DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS
GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE
OCTOBER 13th–14th 2017

From Drew Davis

Keynote Speakers: James Porter (University of California, Berkeley) and Erik Gunderson (University of Toronto)

The question of authenticity – that is, fidelity to the truth, in whatever form it takes – remained at the forefront of Greek and Roman minds. Ancient authors since the time of Homer lingered over the question of whether something or someone accurately reflected what was “true,” and we see the ripples of this problem in the minds of ancient historiographers, orators, playwrights, poets, and even in surviving inscriptions and papyri. Notions of truth defined individual and collective identities, served political ends, and shaped philosophical outlooks in the Graeco-Roman world. Likewise, questions of authenticity remain rooted in our minds today as we examine the material and literary culture of the past: are the artifacts we have accurate representations of the classical world? Do the texts present the world as it was, or in an idealized fashion? Can there be any accurate representation, in words or material, of the truth? To what extent was truth even important at all in the ancient world? Our conference aims to investigate the ways in which ancient peoples grappled with the issues of authenticity, and how we too today deal with the issue of “truth” and “authenticity” when dealing with the fragmented written and material evidence which survives from the ancient world.

The Graduate Students of the Department of Classics at the University of Toronto are seeking papers that will examine questions of authenticity in all subdivisions of Classics and related disciplines, including (but not limited to) philology, history, art history, archaeology, women and gender studies, science and medicine, philosophy, and reception studies. Potential areas of investigation could include, but are not limited to:

  • The purpose and consequence of forged objects and sites, such as counterfeit currency or the Casa Romuli
  • Conceptions of “authentic” civic identity as defined against the intrusion of homines novi and metics into the Roman and Athenian states
  • Autobiographical and civic representation in epigraphy
  • Pseudepigraphic writings and (potentially) misattributed poems, such as the works of Pseudo-Plutarch, the Catalepton of Virgil, and the Halieutica of Ovid
  • Textual criticism and its impact on the authenticity of an original text
  • The received arrangement of a text (e.g. the poetic libellus) as representative of the text’s original conception
  • The conceits and authenticity of the presented world in poetry, historiography, and other literary modes
  • Sincerity of the poetic voice and persona
  • Mimesis as representation of the world
  • Ancient and modern theories of translation, and “corruption” in adaptation, such as the interpretatio Romana, the translations of Callimachus by Catullus, and Roman appropriations of Greek terms
  • Ancient conceptions of the self, and the deceit of self-representation
  • Philosophical attempts at capturing “the true”

M.A. students, Ph.D. students, and recent recipients of graduate degrees are invited to submit anonymized abstracts (.doc/.pdf) of no more than 300 words, for papers of 15–20 minutes in length, to ClassicsGSC@utoronto.ca by May 31, 2017. Accepted participants will be notified by email before the end of July.

CFP: BETWEEN NOSTOS AND EXILIUM: "HOME" IN ON-SCREEN REPRESENTATIONS OF THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN WORLD AND ITS NARRATIVES
AN AREA OF MULTIPLE PANELS FOR THE 2017 FILM & HISTORY CONFERENCE:
"REPRESENTING HOME: THE REAL AND IMAGINED SPACES OF BELONGING"
The Hilton, Milwaukee City Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA)
1-5 November, 2017

From Meredith Safran

Artists working in screen media have long explored the concept of "home" in ancient Mediterranean narratives. For example, Homer's Odyssey, the most frequently adapted narrative, depicts a homecoming that will restore the protagonist's identity within his family, estate, and community, all of which are threatened by a band of outsiders that attempts to destroy that home by claiming his wife, killing his heir, and seizing his property: an ironic replay of Odysseus' role in the Trojan War. The surviving Trojans end their exile by founding a new homeland, Rome, where shifting alliances within the socio-political network of ancestral houses blur the boundaries of domestic and civic interests until one household subsumes the homeland. In what ways are modern depictions of e.g. oikos, polis, domus, and patria reflective of these ancient concepts? In what ways is the private sentimentality that "home" entails in contemporary discourse fused with the affective value of such concepts in order to facilitate audience investment in ancient characters' aspirations and struggles?

This area invites 20-minute papers (inclusive of visual presentations) considering the depiction of "home" as physical or symbolic structure in on-screen interpretations of the ancient Mediterranean world and its narratives. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • articulating family relations within the home: parents, children, spouses, siblings
  • gendered roles within the oikos or domus
  • the ancestral "house": individual, familial, and civic functions
  • "others" in the home, e.g. slaves, guests, hostages, and illegitimate offspring
  • home as patrimony: dramas of property, kinship, and inheritance
  • tension between domestic and civic loyalties
  • domestic space as public and/or private space
  • the significance of the house as mise-en-scène
  • the view of home from away, e.g. during military service, pilgrimage, exploration
  • narratives of return: the romance and danger of homecoming, challenges of reintegration
  • exiles and home: longing and alienation
  • the destruction of house or homeland, from within or without
  • foundations: the creation of new houses and homelands

Proposals for complete panels (three related presentations) are also welcome, so long as they include an abstract and contact information, including an e-mail address, for each presenter. For updates and registration information about the upcoming meeting, see the Film & History website (www.filmandhistory.org).

Please e-mail your 200-word proposal by 1 June 2017 for early consideration, and by 1 July 2017 for general consideration, to the area chair:
