Note that the minutes of the 2017 AGM as well as the Report of the Nominating Committee have been very slightly revised since they were first posted (for typos and to add one missing line). If you have already downloaded them, I suggest you do so again, but you definitely do not need to read them again.

The Women's Network of the Classical Association of Canada is currently seeking nominations (self-nominations are welcome) for a Communications Officer for a one-year term. Responsibilities include working with the Executive to develop and strengthen engagement activities; support and promote WNCAC goals, including message development, website, social media content creation and media outreach that will help advance our work; and identify target audiences and create strategies to engage them effectively. Nominations are welcomed from all members of the WN and should be sent to Lisa Hughes (lahughes@ucalgary.ca), by April 30th 2018. The successful candidate will be announced at the WN meeting at the CAC Annual Meeting in Calgary. For further information, please contact Lisa.

The Women's Network is calling for nominations for the position of Secretary for the WN. The office of Secretary lasts for two years. It is anticipated that the Secretary then moves up to the position of Vice-President and, finally, to President, a total of six years altogether. The Council of the CAC wishes to offer each year, insofar as possible, financial assistance to encourage and support participation at the Annual conference for graduate students and those with a PhD but without a permanent academic position. Students will be reimbursed after they have attended the meetings. Students must provide the Treasurer with the application form and original hard copy receipts for travel (air, bus, train or cost of gas; maximum two nights hotel); no one will be reimbursed without original, hard copy receipts. Financial support will be in the range of $150. The deadline for application is June 8, 2018.

Le Conseil de la SCEC souhaite offrir chaque année, dans la mesure du possible, une assistance financière pour encourager et soutenir la participation au Congrès annuel des étudiant(e)s gradué(e)s et détenteurs de doctorat sans position permanente. Les remboursement sont effectués à la suite du Congrès. Les candidats au soutien financier doivent fournir au trésorier de la Société le formulaire et les copies imprimées originales de leurs documents de voyage, transport et hébergement (par avion, autobus, train ou frais d'essence; maximum permis de 2 nuitées); aucun remboursement ne sera effectué sans la présentation des originaux des titres de transport. ANCIENT GREEK AND ROMAN STUDIES
12-MONTH LIMITED-TERM APPOINTMENT

Trent University invites applications for a 12-month limited-term appointment in the Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Program at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing August 15, 2018. This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.

Candidates are expected to have a completed Ph.D. in Classics (or a closely related discipline), demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, and an active research program. We are particularly interested in applicants who are focussed on positive engagement with students, who are interested in teaching transferable skills, and who believe in innovative approaches to teaching. We especially welcome applications from candidates who could contribute to the student Classics Drama Group which has produced a Classical play annually since 1993.

The successful candidate will teach the following seven half-credit courses.

FALL:

• GREK 1000H: Elementary Greek I
• GREK 2000H: Intermediate Greek I
• LATN 1000H: Elementary Latin I

WINTER:

• GREK 1001H: Elementary Greek II
• GREK 2001H/3000H: Intermediate Greek II & Advanced Greek

The Department of Classics and Religion at the University of Calgary, in conjunction with the biannual meeting of the Collectif d'Anthropologie et d'Histoire du Spirituel et des Affects (CAHSA), invites paper proposals for an interdisciplinary conference on the theme "Preaching as Performance". The conference will take place October 26-28, 2018 at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Preaching and its impact as a cultural form of not only religious but also social, political, literary, and aesthetic value has become a growing area of scholarship. This conference aims to foster research on the anthropology and history of religious teaching and public communication by providing an occasion for the interdisciplinary and comparative analysis of preaching as a performance event. We welcome papers focused on any religious tradition or historical period that explore some aspect of the way preaching uses theatrical, material, sensory, linguistic, and affective resources to produce religious sentiment, form religious subjects, and transmit doctrinal messages.

Suggested areas of focus include but are not limited to:

• Content – Relationship between sermonic genres and liturgical, political, or religious events in different traditions and periods
• Scene – The locations and environments of preaching
• Audience – The relationship between preaching and audience response and performance
• Preacher – The training, performance methods, self-presentation, and reputation of those who preach
• Affect – The emotional impact of preaching and its environment (crowds, venue, music, special effects, etc.)
• Props – The use of objects to activate the senses, augment the preacher’s message, or facilitate devotion during the preaching event
• Distractions – Internal or external obstacles to retaining audience attention and strategies adopted to enhance or promote preaching or the preacher

Papers can be submitted in either English or French. (Note that although written communications related to the conference will in most cases be bilingual, some portions of the program will be in English, such as the welcome and keynote addresses.) Proposals of one page or less (including the author's biographical information) should be sent by May 1, 2018 to the following email addresses:

L'importance non seulement religieuse mais culturelle, sociale, politique, littéraire et esthétique de la prédication est l'objet d'une attention croissante des chercheurs. Ce colloque s'inscrit dans ce renouveau d'intérêt pour l'étude de l'anthropologie et de l'histoire de la communication religieuse, et se veut l'occasion d'une analyse interdisciplinaire et comparative du rapport entre la prédication et la performance. Nous sollicitons des propositions portant sur toute période historique et toute tradition religieuse et examinant la manière dont la prédication, pour produire des sentiments religieux, participer à la formation des sujets et diffuser certains contenus, recourt à des éléments théâtraux, matériels, sensoriels, linguistiques, et affectifs.

Les problématiques à explorer incluent, de manière non limitative :

• Le contenu – Le rapport entre les multiples genres littéraires de l'éloquence de la chaire et leur contexte liturgique, politique, ou religieux
• La scène – Les sites et les environnements matériels de la prédication
• Le public – Le rapport entre la prédication et la réponse ou performance de ses auditeurs/spectateurs
• Le prédicateur – La formation, la préparation, les méthodes de ceux qui prêchent ; leur ethos préalable (ou prédiscursif) – c'est-à-dire leur réputation préexistant au discours –, leur ethos interne (ou discursif) – c'est-à-dire la manière dont le locuteur se présente dans leur discours
• L'affect – Les sentiments, émotions, et sensations physiques produits par la prédication et son contexte (la foule, le cadre, la musique, les effets spéciaux, etc.)
• Les objets scéniques – L'usage lors de la prédication d'objets, la manière dont ils sollicitent les sens et suscitent des émotions, mettant en valeur le message ou facilitant la dévotion
• Les perturbations – Les obstacles internes ou externes qui parasitent l'attention du public et/ou les stratégies mises en place pour diminuer les distractions

Les propositions peuvent être rédigées en anglais ou en français. (Bien que le colloque soit bilingue, il faut noter que certains éléments du programme seront en anglais, tels que l'accueil, la conférence principale, et un bon nombre des communications.) Les propositions, qui n'excéderont pas une page et comporteront un bref résumé biographique, doivent être envoyées par courriel avant le 1er mai 2018 aux adresses suivantes :

UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL IN SICILY

There are still a few places left for the upcoming season of excavation at Gerace, Enna Province, Sicily, directed by Professor Roger Wilson (UBC) in the collaboration with the Regione Siciliana. The site is that of a Roman rural estate centre, whose owner's name we know in the second half of the fourth century CE – Philippianus. The 2018 season will concentrate on the excavation of a tile kiln and also of Philippianus' baths, including the uncovering of a mosaic in the frigidarium which carries an inscription on all four sides (only two sides of it were exposed in 2017). The excavation takes place between 07 May and 02 June. Accommodation is in an Agriturismo (with swimming pool) 8 minutes' walk from the site. Excursions on Sundays to places of archaeological interest elsewhere in Sicily are included in the price, which is $2995 (excluding your flight).
