EDMUND F BLOEDOW
September 17, 1930 – January 21, 2019

From John Serrati

EDMUND F. BLOEDOW passed away in his 89th year at the Ottawa Heart Institute, after many years of complicated heart troubles. He received his Ph.D. in Greek History from the Universität Würzburg, B.A. (Hons.) in Classics from the University of Toronto, and a diploma in Theology from Emmaus Bible School. He was Professor Emeritus at the University of Ottawa where he taught Greek History and Archaeology from 1968 until his retirement (and kept on teaching courses for several years afterwards). Dr. Bloedow also taught at Lakehead University and the Beirut College for Women (Lebanon). He is the author of Beitrage Zur Geschichte des Ptolemaios XII (1963), Alcibiades Re-examined (1973), an English edition of H. Bengtson’s History of Greece: From the Beginnings to the Byzantine Era (1988), and has written over ninety articles and book reviews on Greek history, the Aegean Bronze Age, and renowned archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann.

The Council of the CAC wishes to offer each year, insofar as possible, financial assistance to encourage and support participation at the Annual conference for graduate students and those without a permanent academic position. Applicants will be reimbursed after they have attended the meetings. Applicants must provide the Treasurer with this application form and original hard copy receipts for travel (air, bus, train or cost of gas; maximum two nights hotel); no one will be reimbursed without original, hard copy receipts. Financial support will be in the range of $150.

Le Conseil de la SCEC offre chaque année, dans la mesure du possible, une assistance financière pour encourager et soutenir la participation au Congrès annuel des étudiant(e)s gradué(e)s et ceux qui ne détiennent pas de position permanente. Les remboursement sont effectués à la suite du Congrès. Les candidats au soutien financier doivent fournir à la trésorière de la Société le formulaire et les copies imprimées originales de leurs documents de voyage, transport et hébergement (par avion, autobus, train ou frais d'essence; maximum permis de 2 nuitées); aucun remboursement ne sera effectué sans la présentation des originaux des titres de transport. Le montant du remboursement sera environ $150.




DESMOND CONACHER SCHOLARSHIP (REMINDER) / BOURSE DESMOND CONACHER (RAPPEL)

Call for applications — This scholarship is offered in memory of Desmond Conacher, formerly Professor of Classics at Trinity College, Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Honorary President of the Classical Association of Canada. The scholarship has been endowed through donations from his family, friends, colleagues, and universities with which he was associated. Its purpose is to assist and encourage a young scholar entering graduate studies in classics. The scholarship is administered by the Classical Association of Canada through its Awards Committee. One award of $2,500 is offered each year.

Eligibility and criteria — Applicants must be Canadian students (citizens or permanent residents) intending to enter the first year of graduate studies in a classics or similar programme at a Canadian university. Specializations within the general area of classics such as ancient history, ancient philosophy, and classical archaeology are eligible. The main criteria are academic achievement, professional promise, and an appropriate under-graduate preparation.

Application procedure — Completed applications should be sent electronically in pdf format by April 1st to Prof. Bruce Robertson (brobertson@mta.ca), CAC Awards Committee Chair. See the website for details.

The award will be paid in September subject to confirmation that the winner has registered in an appropriate graduate program.

La Fondation a été constituée grâce aux généreux dons de la famille, des amis et des collègues de D. Conacher, ainsi que des universités auxquelles il était affilié. Ses objectifs sont d’encourager et de soutenir financièrement un jeune étudiant entreprenant des études supérieures en études classiques au Canada. La Fondation est administrée par la SCÉC et son Comité de sélection. Une bourse de 2500 $ est attribuée chaque année.

Les principaux critères de sélection sont les réalisations académiques, les objectifs de carrière et les perspectives de succès, et le fait de posséder une formation de premier cycle pertinente.

The Department of Classics at the University of Winnipeg invites applications for a position as a contract Instructor (per-course) in Spring/Summer 2019. We are hiring for the following three courses:

CLAS-1011: Greek Society (CLAS-1011): "Students are introduced to the fundamental social concepts, cultural characteristics, and political institutions of ancient Greek society." May 6 - July 3; Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 930-1120; projected enrollment 90; 18 classes in total.

CLAS-1012: Roman Society (CLAS-1012): "Students are introduced to the fundamental social concepts, cultural characteristics, and political institutions of ancient Roman society." May 6 - July 3; Tuesday and Thursday: 1030-1245; projected enrollment 90; 17 classes in total.

CLAS-2701: Classical Mythology (CLAS-2701): "This course is designed to acquaint the student with myths found in Greek and Latin literature. Origins, functions, and interpretations of myths are examine." June 19 - Aug 19; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 1230-1420; projected enrollment 90; 18 classes in total.

TEN-MONTH SESSIONAL POSITION

The Department of Classical Studies at Bishop's University (Sherbrooke, QC) invites applications for a ten-month sessional position, to begin September 2019. The successful candidate will ideally be a Hellenist, with research and/or teaching specialization in the following areas: introductory and intermediate ancient Greek language; Greek tragic theatre; Classical mythology and literature; Greek culture and civilization. Candidates should hold a PhD in Classical Studies or a related field.

The Classical and Medieval Studies Program at Bates College invites applications for a two-year, four-course lectureship (80%), beginning in fall 2019. We welcome applications from candidates trained in the history and culture of Archaic, Classical, or Hellenistic Greece. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach two courses in Classical Greek language and two civilization courses, one an introductory survey, and the other more advanced course in an area of specialization. In fall 2019 the successful candidate will be responsible for a course called “Introduction to the Ancient World.”

The four-course load spans two semesters, with two courses in the fall and two in the winter. Research or teaching interest in issues of social justice, and expertise in digital humanities are especially welcome. Salary and benefits are competitive.

The college and the Program in Classical and Medieval Studies are committed to enhancing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum. Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference
COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

Our interdisciplinary graduate student conference, The World Upside-Down: Absurdities, Inversions, and Alternate Realities, will take place on November 1st-2nd 2019 at Columbia University in the City of New York. The conference will feature a keynote address by Patrick R. Crowley (University of Chicago).

We hope to hear papers in the fields of history, literature, theory and archaeology that engage with the absurd, inverted, and alternative in the ancient world.

Abstract submissions are due by May 4th, 2019 and should be sent to cuconference2019@gmail.com in accordance with the guidelines laid out in the CfP. Any questions can also be directed to aforementioned email address.
