I am pleased to announce the results of this year’s High School translation competition. I am extremely grateful to Diana Pai (St. Clement’s School) for her hard work and dedication to this year’s contest. There were a large number of entries, and the COVID closures interfered with the adjudication, making the work much more onerous. I have appended Diana’s very thorough report below.

Report of the adjudicator / Rapport de l'organisatrice

Dear Sirs and Madams,

Thank you for the opportunity this year to adjudicate the High School Latin Sight Translation Contest. It was once again a rewarding and fruitful experience to read the numerous entries translated into both English and French.

Please find below a brief report on this year's contest.

The contest passage: The level of difficulty of this passage appeared to be suitable for high school.

My thanks also to Dr. Maynes, along with Maggie Rogow, Patrick Letendre, and Agathe Roman for their collective eagle eyes and feedback throughout the proofing process.

Some numbers: Of the approximately 80 entries submitted this year, 46 were selected for a second-round reading – a number higher than the previous year – with 28 French entries, and 18 English entries. The quality of the translations this year was also quite strong, thus eliciting a third round of reading (25 papers – 15 French and 10 English), followed by a fourth round (13 papers – 7 French and 6 English) before the final reading of 10 papers (5 French and 5 English) to determine winners and honourable mentions.

Overall, this year's passage was less challenging than last year's, with several students able to complete the translation. The papers that were in contention very closely reflected the content of the passage.

The adjudication process: A closer reading of the passages from the finalists was made. Entries were once again judged on three main criteria:
   (1) correct and precise application of grammar;
   (2) accuracy of vocabulary;
   (3) rendering of translation into French / English idiom (e.g. fluency in translation, turns of phrases, structure of sentences, etc.)

In the end, one translation emerged as the clear winner, with one 2nd place winner, and a tie for 3rd place. Interestingly, the margin of separation between 2nd place, 3rd place, and Honourable Mentions was very minor, often with only 0.5-1 points marking their respective separations.

General areas of difficulty common to most of the entries: You will find below a summary of the most common errors, both in French and in English translations. Interestingly, there were a few errors that were common to both French and English papers.

Where nuances between perfect, pluperfect, and imperfect translations did not affect the overall meaning and understanding of passage, translations were not unduly penalised. These nuances – along with mastery of idiom – were reserved for helping distinguish strong entries from the best entries, and to determine finalists.

Line 1 / Ligne 1 :
   • petere – (EN) often mistranslated, given the context, as "attack" / "head for" / "take" / (FR) souvent traduit comme « attaquer » ;
   • quoque – (EN) often not translated / (FR) souvent pas traduit ;
   • cognito – (FR) parfois traduit en erreur comme « je connais ».

Line 3 / Ligne 3 :
   • mihi dixisti – (EN) common errors with subject: "I said" / "I was told" / (FR) souvent traduit en erreur « dis-moi » / « tu me dis ».

Line 4 / Ligne 4 :
   • re publica salva – (FR) souvent traduit littéralement: « chose publique » / « loi » / « les choses publiques » / « publique et sain » ;
   • multis partibus – (FR) parfois traduit au singulier: « dans ce cas ».

Line 5 / Ligne 5 :
   • quia – (EN) often mistranslated as "if" / (FR) souvent traduit en erreur comme « si » ;
   • est potius quam res publica profligetur – (EN) sometimes mistranslated as "better than being thrown by the Republic" / (FR) parfois traduit comme verbe actif: « mieux de renverser… ».

Line 6 / Ligne 6 :
   • verbis acceptis – (EN) literal translation of "accepted" employed by most students, instead of more idiomatic "received" or "learned" / (FR) souvent traduit littéralement comme « accepté ».

Line 7 / Ligne 7 :
   • tradidit – (EN) errors in tense, where verb is translated in the present or the future / (FR) verbe parfois traduit au présent ou au futur ;
   • oportebat – (FR) souvent traduit sans la force d'obligation (e.g. « il fait semblant »).

Line 8 / Ligne 8 :
   • tolerare et curare – (EN) often mistaken as a verb that governs accusative puerum, instead of introducing the ut ego quam minimum… clause: "to support and care for a boy" / (FR) souvent traduit comme un verbe qui est suivi de l'accusatif puerum, au lieu d'un verbe qui introduit la proposition ut ego quam minimum: « de soutenir le garçon… ».

Line 9 / Ligne 9 :
   • quaecumque ageres – (FR) erreurs de traduction: « toutes celles qui agissent » / « à quiconque » ;
   • velles ea maxime mihi placere – (EN) both translations of ea appeared "you should want it to please me very much" / "you should want to please me very much by it";
   • neque facias – (EN) variations in verb tenses, sometimes rendered as perfect tense / (FR) parfois traduit au conditionnel, au passé composé.

Line 11 / Ligne 11 :
   • insistere – (EN) verb sometimes not translated, in favour of translating only habentes and praebentes;
   • res habentes et praebentes molestiis insistere – (EN) habentes often taken not as "suffering troubles" or "having issues" but rather as "causing" them / (FR) expressions souvent combinées en une seule expression, « entreprendre des choses posant des ennuis ».

Overall, this year’s passage proved to be fairly balanced in terms of challenge and translatability, given the relative number of entries that made it to the second round. The large number of close and approximate translations suggest that it was suitable for high school.

I have greatly enjoyed working with Dr. Maynes and the revision team throughout the process, and wish to take this occasion to once again recognise Dr. Maynes's guidance and support – and the CAC's patience with the delayed adjudication during this most interesting of years.

Updating the Directory of Classicists in Canada

I have undertaken an update of the Directory of Canadian Classicists. I would appreciate if you sent me corrections concerning yourself and your colleagues: titles, contact information, etc. Please let me know of members who are deceased –I have myself removed three or four of them recently– or have moved to another university or country. Note that this is a directory of Classicists: I will not add names of people who happen to teach only a Classics course tangentially while their professional life is in another discipline.

Les information sont présentées dans la langue de travail habituelle de chaque collègue. L'annuaire n'est accessible, pour l'instant, que dans sa version anglophone en ce qui concerne son titre et son emplacement sur le site. Cette situation sera corrigée en septembre.
