 The Department of Classics at Queen’s University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates interested in teaching courses in the following: Introduction to Archaeology 1: Great Discoveries in Archaeology (CLST 130) this is a course with an expected enrolment of 100 students and taught in the fall term; Roman History (CLST 201) this is a course with an expected enrolment of 135 students and taught in the winter term; Scientific and medical terminology (CLST 204) this is a course with an expected enrolment of 190 students and will be taught in the fall term; The Roman Republic (CLST 340) this is a course with an expected enrolment of 50 students and taught in the fall term; Intermediate Latin (LATN 209B) this is a second half of a course with an expected enrolment of 15 and taught in the winter term. Candidates should have a Ph.D, and teaching experience at the university level in Classics.  This is a fall/winter term appointment for the period September 1st, 2022, to April 30th, 2023, with classes in session from September 6th, 2022 to April 7th, 2023.

Course Description:

 

CLST 130 – Introduction to Archaeology l: Great Discoveries in Archaeology (fall term)

Development of the discipline and most important discoveries; analysis of historic and prehistoric cultures and sites with emphasis on the ancient Mediterranean.

Requirements: Prerequisite None. Exclusion CLST 129.

 

CLST 201- Roman History (winter term)

Survey of the basic social and political developments in Rome from kingdom to republic to empire.
LEARNING HOURS 126 (36L;90P)

Requirements: Prerequisite Level 2 or above.

 

CLST 204 – Scientific and medical terminology (fall term)

This course will introduce students to the vocabulary, building blocks, and structural quirks of Greek and Latin scientific terminology to provide them with a strong foundation for understanding technical vocabulary as they encounter it in their educational and professional lives. Students will also complete the course with a stronger understanding of the etymology and linguistic structures of English more generally.
NOTE: This course does not require any previous knowledge of Greek or Latin.

CLST 340 – The Roman Republic (fall term)

Emergence of Early Rome and the social and political growth of the Republic.

Requirements: Prerequisite CLST 201 or permission of the Department.

 

LATN 209B – Intermediate Latin (winter term)

Review of grammar followed by a study of representative works of Ovid and other authors. In addition to developing facility in translation, study of literary content and background of authors.
LEARNING HOURS 282 (72L;210P).

Requirements: Prerequisite LATN 110.

Note A student may alternatively use 4U Latin as a prerequisite and should contact the Department of Classics for permission to enrol in this course.
