Graduate Programs at the University of Victoria

The Department of Greek and Roman Studies at the University of Victoria invites applications for their two-year MA program and its four-year PhD program.

The University of Victoria is located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and situated on the rugged west coast on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples.

Our department is committed to a balanced approach to the study of the ancient world with equal emphasis placed on languages and literature, history, and archaeology. We offer research strengths in interconnectivity in the ancient Mediterranean; technology in the ancient world; social and economic history; human-environmental interaction; and gender and identity studies in ancient Greece and Rome. We encourage applications from candidates whose work is cross-disciplinary in nature or expands on the traditional boundaries of Greek and Roman Studies.

Our program prepares graduate students at the MA level for advanced graduate research as well as professional degrees in other fields (e.g., education, law, politics, journalism, archival and library sciences, conservation, museum studies). Recent MA graduates have been admitted to competitive PhD programs at the University of Cincinnati, UCLA, University of Michigan, University of British Columbia, and Cornell. Other graduates have developed successful careers in collections management, museum education, archaeological illustration, and education.

The Department is committed to creating an intellectually vibrant, culturally inclusive, and academically diverse community. We actively encourage applications from candidates from groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity.

Graduate students will have the opportunity of conducting field work in Greece on the Eastern Boeotia Archaeological Project (https://ebapexcavations.org/) or in Spain on the Ancient Ilduro Archaeological Project (https://ilduro.uvic.ca/). Several of our previous MA students have incorporated the study of archaeological finds from these projects into their thesis research. For the 2023/24 academic year, Dr. Trevor Van Damme has SSHRC funding to support an MA student interested in research focused on Boeotian history or material culture. Applicants interested in these areas are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.

Consideration for financial support is automatic upon receipt of applications for admissions before February 1, 2023. Funding packages consist of a combination of fellowships, scholarships, and TA work. Students eligible for CGS-SSHRC (https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp) are encouraged to contact their potential supervisor and the graduate advisor prior to the December 1, 2022 submission deadline. All students are eligible for additional funding for travel to present at academic conferences and participate in field work.
