Lionel Sanders

21 May 1942 – 14 October 2022

The Classics Section of the Department of Classics, Modern Languages and Linguistics was saddened by the recent news of the passing away of our colleague, Prof. Lionel Sanders.  Lionel had retired from the department in 2017, after a 45-year career in Classics at Concordia University.  A specialist in Greek history (his Ph.D. dissertation was entitled Dionysius and Greek Tradition), Lionel was particularly interested in the history and historiography of Greek Sicily in the  4th century BCE and the relations of Jews and non-Jews in Hellenistic and Roman Alexandria.   Lionel came to Canada from the University of London (BA 1963, MA 1966) where he studied with Prof.  Arnaldo Momigliano).  He completed his doctorate at McMaster University in 1970 with Prof. J.A.S. Evans.  After a brief teaching contract at Queen’s University, he arrived at Concordia University in 1974, when it was still Loyola College and before it merged with Sir George Williams University.  Lionel pioneered the first course on women in Ancient Greece and Rome at Concordia, as well as most of the courses on Greek and Roman history in the Classics curriculum.  He was department chair of the then Department of Classics from 1980 to 1986 and served as Vice-President of Classical Association of Canada from 1983-1985.

He leaves to mourn his wife Janet and his daughter Yael from a previous marriage.
