Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream (Contractually Limited Term Appointment) in Ancient Language Pedagogy, University of Toronto

The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto (St. George Campus, Downtown Toronto) invites applications for a five-year contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in the area of Ancient Language Pedagogy. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream beginning July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter, and ending June 30, 2028.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Classics or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of pedagogical innovation and excellence in teaching. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. The successful applicant will be expected to teach and coordinate teaching in the Department’s thriving undergraduate Greek and Latin programs; to provide leadership in pedagogical innovation and curricular renewal; and to train and mentor graduate student course instructors.

The Department of Classics currently teaches over 400 undergraduate students in ancient Greek and Latin each year and is working to make the study of the ancient languages even more accessible and inclusive. The successful candidate will contribute to this effort through innovation in the design and delivery of introductory and intermediate language courses. They will also coordinate and train the graduate students who serve as course instructors in the language sequence and support outreach initiatives.

Candidates must present clear evidence of pedagogical innovation and teaching excellence and have the demonstrated capacity to adeptly teach introductory and/or intermediate courses in Ancient Greek and/or Latin, as well as courses in classical civilization (in translation) at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will also have excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills as demonstrated in their application materials.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogy will be provided through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, and a teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online at https://jobs.utoronto.ca. Applicants must submit a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; and a complete teaching dossier to include a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations or evidence of superior performance in other teaching-related activities. Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates are therefore also asked to submit a 1-2 page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. At least one reference must primarily address the candidate’s teaching. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each once an application is submitted (this happens overnight). Applicants, however, remain responsible for ensuring that references submit letters (on letterhead, dated and signed) by the closing date.

Submission guidelines can by found at http://uoft.me/how-to-apply. Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format.
