NOEL DEEVES ROBERTSON
AUGUST 15th 1936–SEPTEMBER 12th 2019

From Angus Smith

It is with great sadness that we pass along news of the death of Dr. Noel Robertson, Professor Emeritus of Classics at Brock University. Noel died peacefully on September 12, 2019 at the age of 83 in Victoria, BC, and leaves behind his wife Laura Robertson, children, and grandchildren.

Noel was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and moved at an early age to Fort William, Ontario. He earned his BA at the University of Toronto, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Classical Philology at Cornell University. While a graduate student, he spent time at the American School for Classical Studies at Athens and participated in archaeological excavations at Corinth, where he met his wife and fellow graduate student Laura Fahy. After graduate school he was appointed a fellow at the University of Bristol, and a post-doctoral fellow at Cornell University, before beginning his tenure in the Department of Classics at Brock University in 1970. He taught at Brock for 32 years, until his retirement in 2002.

At Brock, Noel chaired the Department of Classics on two occasions (1973-82, 1998-2001), and served on numerous committees. He also served as a member of the board of directors for the Canadian Archaeological Institute at Athens (now the Canadian Institute in Greece) from 1978–80, and as Vice-President of the Classical Association of Canada from 1994–96. Noel authored a large body of scholarly works, with an emphasis on ritual and religious practice in ancient Greek society. He read Latin, Greek, German, and French, and he authored some 80 articles and chapters as well as two books: Festivals and Legends: The Formation of Greek Cities in the Light of Public Ritual (1992) and Religion and Reconciliation in Greek Cities: The Sacred Laws of Selinas and Cyrene (2009) as well as an edited volume, The Archaeology of Cyprus: Recent Developments (1976). His research at the American School and his utilization of material culture in his scholarship made him a pioneer of the Department’s unique brand of interdisciplinarity.

In lieu of flowers, Noel’s family has asked that donations may be made to: The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, 6-8 Charlton St., Princeton, NJ 08540-5232; email: ascsa@ascsa.org.

Our heartfelt condolences to his wife Laura and all family members. Hold tight to the memories and may they comfort you at this difficult time and in the days ahead.

CAC ELAINE FANTHAM AWARD FOR PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT IN CLASSICS
PRIX « ELAINE FANTHAM » DE LA SCÉC POUR LA MOBILISATION DU PUBLIC EN ÉTUDES CLASSIQUES

From / De Mark Joyal

This award is offered in memory of Professor Elaine Fantham, well known internationally for the wide range and accessibility of her scholarship in Latin Literature and Roman social history. She held positions at the University of St. Andrews, Indiana University Bloomington, the University of Toronto, Trinity College, and Princeton University. She was no stranger to the Association, serving on the editorial board of Phoenix (1976–79), as vice-president of the Association (1982–84), and as its Honorary President (2001-6). Professor Fantham was also dubbed “the rock star of the classics world” for her public engagement. From 1996 on, she contributed short comments on classical topics to National Public Radio in the United States, where she interested millions in the study of classical antiquity. This award is thus a fitting tribute to Professor Fantham who gave a public and very human voice to our discipline. It honours CAC members for their exceptional projects, performances, or events that address communities outside the academy and that engage those communities with the ancient world, its reception, and/or individual research into these fields. The type of activity and the medium of engagement (such as face to face, film, radio, print, podcast, video, exhibit and so on) are not restricted, however the engagement must be based on responsible scholarship. Social media engagement, on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, may be a factor, but not the primary medium. The award recognizes the importance and benefits of such engagement to communities, the field of Classics, as well as scholarly projects.

Criteria: Activities occurring within the last five years only are eligible. Outreach developed as part of a curriculum, for the promotion of individual departments, or undertaken as part of a CAC-sponsored event is not eligible. Nominees must be members of the CAC.

Nomination Process: Nominations should be sent by February 15, 2020, to the Past President of the CAC, Mark Joyal (m.joyal@umanitoba.ca), and include a letter of nomination, a detailed description of the activity, and an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae of the nominee. Documentation attesting to the impact of the engagement, such as testimonia from participants and communities, media coverage, and/or resulting publications will greatly strengthen any nomination, but such materials are not a requirement. Self-nominations are encouraged.

Announcement of the Award: The Past President will present the Award at the Annual General Meeting of the Association in May.

PHOENIX SUPPLEMENTARY SERIES
FIDES IN FLAVIAN LITERATURE

From Jonathan Edmondson

The co-editors of the PHOENIX SUPPLEMENTARY SERIES are pleased to announce the publication of the latest volume (56) in the series, Fides in Flavian Literature, edited by Antony Augoustakis, Emma Buckley, and Claire Stocks.

Fides in Flavian Literature explores the ideology of "good faith" (fides) during the time of the emperors Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian (69–96 CE), the new imperial dynasty that gained power in the wake of the civil wars of the period. The contributors to this volume consider the significance and semantic range of this Roman value in works that deal in myth, contemporary poetry, and history in both prose and verse. Though it does not claim to offer the comprehensive "last word" on fides in Flavian Rome, the book aims to show that fides in this period was subjected to a particularly striking and special brand of contestation and reconceptualization, used to interrogate the broad cultural changes and anxieties of the Flavian period as well as connect to a republican and imperial past. The editors argue that fides was both a vehicle for reconciliation and a means to test the nature of "good faith" in the wake of a devastating and divisive period in Roman history.

The essays are divided into four main sections: Flavian Politics, Flavian Myth, Flavian History, and Revisiting Flavian fides.

The volume was published in August 2019. Further details may be found on the University of Toronto Press website.
