The Mark Golden Book Award

Mark Golden was internationally recognized for his work on ancient Greek childhood, sport and gender, but was equally known for his wit, congeniality, and ardent support of Classics in Canada. Upon graduation from the University of Toronto and a brief period at the University of British Columbia, he joined the Department of Classics at the University of Winnipeg in 1982. He remained there until his retirement in 2015. Mark was the Honorary President of the Classical Association of Canada from 2018 until his death in 2020. A prolific author and voracious reader, this book prize honours Mark’s appreciation of well written words.

The Mark Golden Book Award is presented biennially at the Annual Meeting to the best scholarly monograph published by a member of the CAC in the previous four years. It will be awarded next in May, 2024. The aim of this award is to recognize CAC members’ research excellence and its significance to our shared disciplines.

Eligibility and criteria

Adjudication criteria include novelty of argument, persuasiveness, impact on the discipline, and clarity of presentation. Authors must have been members of the CAC for two consecutive years prior to nomination and must be members at the time of nomination. Authors may nominate their own books. Only one nomination per author will be considered in any cycle and a book may be nominated only twice. While an author may be nominated for different books in consecutive rounds, a winner of this award may not be nominated again.

Nomination procedure

Each nomination must include the following:

  • an electronic copy of the book (final proofs are acceptable) in pdf format
  • a brief (500 word) description of the work’s significance to its field
  • an up-to-date CV of the nominee

Documentation attesting to the impact of the work, such as book reviews, testimonia from experts in the field of research, but such materials are not a requirement

Applications should be forwarded by December 15 to the Past President of the CAC.
