Call for Papers “Ancient Coins and Portraiture” 

Organized by the Numismatics Interest Group of the Archaeological Institute of America 

For the Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America 

Jan. 5-8, 2023, New Orleans, LA 

Portraits are the single most common iconographic theme found on ancient coinage. They lend authority not only to the coin as a piece of money, but also to any message conveyed by the images on the reverse. For most of the subjects of these numismatic portraits, coins constitute their most prolific artistic representation, far outstripping three-dimensional portraits. In rare instances numismatic portraits are the only images we have of the people they depict. The study of numismatic portraits has also extensively influenced the study of portraits in other media, especially sculpture. The Numismatics Interest Group of the AIA invites abstracts on any aspect of ancient numismatic portraiture, from the Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity, and especially papers which explore connections between numismatic portraits and portraits in other media such as sculpture or painting. 

Please send an abstract of no more than 300 words to Martin Beckmann (beckmam@mcmaster.ca) by Feb 28, 2022, in order to allow time for anonymous peer review. Papers will be 15 or 20 minutes (please specify requested time) and all presenters must be AIA members in good standing at the time of the meeting.
