Description:

The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) is the second-largest division of the University of Toronto, Canada’s preeminent research institution. Since 2021, Sealings and Lives of Maresha (SLiM) is a training ground for undergraduate and graduate students and an active research project whose aim it is to conserve, edit and publish over 1,000 seal impression from the archaeological site of Hellenistic Maresha in modern-day Israel. The research team consists of an international team from Canada, the UK and Israel and is currently funded by a SSHRC Insight grant.

 

As principal investigator (PI), Professor Boris Chrubasik invites applications for the position of a Research Associate to take on a leadership role in managing this highly interdisciplinary research environment. Under the guidance of Professor Chrubasik and the other collaborators, the incumbent will be primarily responsible for pushing forward the research vision of the SSHRC-funded Sealings and Lives of Maresha project (2021–2026). They will also be involved in other research projects that advance the field of Ancient History at the University of Toronto Mississauga.

 

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in conducting primary research in ancient studies, especially related to topics of social history, archaeology in the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. They will have substantial experience in facilitating collaborations among researchers across multiple disciplines, and in thinking laterally to identify connections between apparently disparate research methodologies, especially concerning the humanistic, archaeological and scientific study of ancient civilizations.

 

The incumbent will work in the Department of Historical Studies at UTM. They will report directly to Professor Boris Chrubasik. They will work with the projects PI, collaborators, consultants and Research Assistants to set future directions, build local and global collaborations and networks, and manage a range of individual projects effectively.

 

The successful candidate will work independently to:

  • Assist with planning, scheduling, executing and monitoring collaborative work for SLiM.
  • Engage in primary research across a range of projects
  • Program workshops and symposia
  • Organize international trips to conduct field research and build partnerships
  • Facilitate introductions between researchers locally and globally
  • Prepare relevant funding applications and project reports
  • Support staff, research assistants and students as required
  • Maintain project records

 

The incumbent will be expected to perform research with a high degree of independence, and will design, direct, execute, analyse and present in written and oral forms novel investigative studies that build and draw on the incumbent’s academic experience.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

EDUCATION:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant area of Classics, Archaeology, Art history, or Near Eastern Studies.

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least three (3) years of demonstrated expertise in postdoctoral research, with expertise in comparative study of ancient cultures, Mediterranean or near eastern archaeology, ancient history, and/or related fields
  • Experience as a project/team lead required
  • Experience supervising small, interdisciplinary teams of individuals in a university environment
  • Experience in providing project management support.

  • Strong organizational, decision-making and resourcefulness, judgement and diplomacy

 

This is a 3-year term opportunity at 60% FTE with the possibility of extension/renewal.
